Introduction

In ground fire hydrants are common in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia.

For in ground hydrants, a pit is prepared. Some sort of open top and bottom box or frame typically is placed in the pit and around the hydrant. A top (usually a steel or reinforced plastic plate) extends over the box and can be hinged or otherwise connected to or supported by the top of the box or frame.

A disadvantage is that, over time, the pit fills with slime, mud, debris, soil, tree roots, insect nests and the like. Snakes are a safety concern as well. When urgently required, the hydrant outlet may be so buried in debris or clogged by nest material that coupling a fire hose to the hydrant becomes difficult and time consuming.

There would be an advantage if it were possible to better protect the hydrant from debris but in a manner where the hydrant would still be readily available if required, and in a manner that could be easily and reliably achieved.

Our Objective

We aimed to create a product to totally encapsulate the hydrant cavity to keep hydrants clean, and readily accessible in an emergency.

We wanted the solution to be simple, with no water off required.

We worked hard to ensure that the product handles any base shape, water main size, and any 225 SN PVC pipe size. We wanted our solution to be ready for use in new installations, as well as be easily retro-fitted to older styles without compromising any instillation specs; with no extra tooling required.

Our Solution

Presenting the latest innovation in the world of Fire Hydrant Maintenance, “The Ant & Debris Barrier”.

The Ant & Debris Barrier ensures that hydrants are kept free of ant infestation and debris build-up, allowing a more rapid response to emergency situations.

In making the Ant & Debris Barrier, the best materials worldwide were sourced, with these materials undergoing rigorous endurance testing. Importantly, the Ant & Debris Barrier has been fully appraised by Water Services Association Australia (WSAA PA2036).

The Ant & Debris Barrier is a permanent solution to the build up of debris, which is the recognised cause of corrosion and usability failure. Given its permanency, the Ant & Debris Barrier removes the need for regular, and costly, maintenance.
